Disability Tax Credit (DTC)

Clinical Documentation Support for Federal Disability Tax Credit Applications

What Is the Disability Tax Credit?

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a federal non-refundable tax credit administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It is designed to reduce income tax for individuals living with severe and prolonged impairments that substantially affect daily functioning.

Approval for the DTC may also provide access to additional federal benefits, including the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) and Child Disability Benefit.

Neurodiversity and DTC Eligibility

ADHD

ADHD may qualify for the DTC when symptoms result in marked and persistent impairments in mental functions necessary for everyday life, including attention, executive functioning, planning, memory, or self-regulation.

A diagnosis alone does not guarantee eligibility, the CRA evaluates functional impact, not diagnostic labels.

Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder may qualify for the DTC when there is a severe and prolonged restriction in daily functioning, including communication, sensory regulation, social navigation, or adaptive living skills.

As with ADHD, eligibility is based on documented functional impairment over time

Line 33199 – Dependants age 18 or older

This may include the cost of completing Form T2201 and associated clinical documentation.
